Surgical Technologist

A surgical technologist performs a wide variety of duties for the surgical team and their patients at all stages of a surgery. This includes making sure the operating room is properly set up and stocked with the necessary supplies, the surgical equipment and instruments are sterilized, and the patient is prepped before beginning a surgery. It also includes monitoring the condition of the patient and assisting the surgeons and other staff during an operation.

The training to become a surgical tech takes less than 1 year to receive certificates or diplomas or 2 years to receive an associate degree. It is also worthwhile to complete the requirements to become a certified surgical technologist. Although surgical techs should experience fast job growth for years to come, obtaining a certification and specializing in specific types of surgeries typically lead to higher salaries and even more job opportunities.
